The Euro
On January 1st 2002 the new Euro banknotes and coins will be introduced
into 12 Member states of the European Union
Euro Symbol
The € symbol was inspired by the Greek letter epsilon
from Classical times in reference to European civilisation and the
first letter of the word Europe. The 2 parallel lines indicate the
stability of the Euro. The official abbreviation is EUR.
Banknotes
The new banknotes will have the same design throughout Europe. The
notes vary in size and colour and each has a different design from
various architectural periods.
Coins
The 8 denominations of coins vary in size, colour & thickness. The
front of each coin features the same design for all countries &
the reverse is unique to each country. All coins can be used in
any of the European nations. One Euro is 100 cents or euro-cents.
It is possible for each country to call the "cent" whatever they
wish so it is likely that in France they may be called euro-centimes.
